The archive was created from the command line :
 $ cd ..
 $ tar zcf jims_demo_site.tar.gz jims_demo_site/
 $ mv jims_demo_site.tar.gz jims_demo_site/

and can be upacked with
 $ tar zxf jims_demo_site.tar.gz
