Questions about anything at all?

Where we are so far :

• running python programs
• variables and assignment statement
• "for" loops
• using objects & external libraries

What we'll do today in class :

• go over the last homework - my answers using jupyter & drawing.py
• discuss the material in chapter 5
  • lists and list subscripts like foo[3] and bar[4:10]
  • strings and ASCII, including the ord() and chr() functions
  • try dir([]) and dir("") ... what does that tell you?
  • the "accumulator pattern" again, this time with strings and lists
  • ... including one way to reverse a word
  • for thing in things : looping over (range, lists, strings, ...)
  • working with files : reading and writing
• describe the next homework : due Thursday

Reminders about where / how to look things up :

• google "python what I want to know"
• API docs for whatever you're doing

Breakout rooms practice :

Write a program which

• asks the user for a word
• makes a new "encoded" word with every letter moved one higher ('a' becomes 'b')
• ... using the "accumulator pattern" that I showed in class.
• prints that new word

If there's time, modify that program to

• read the original word from a file
• write the new word to another file
